Grammar notes

Not Every Adverb Needs -ly

Some common adverbs are irregular. They do not follow the normal adjective + -ly pattern. Words like well, fast, and hard must be learned in their own form.

  • Example: She sings well.
  • Example: He runs fast.

Quick Rule

  • some adverbs keep a special form
  • do not force -ly onto every adverb

English likes patterns, but it always keeps a few exceptions close.
