Grammar notes

Adding -ly

Many adverbs of manner come from an adjective plus -ly. These words tell us how an action happens. They usually describe the verb, not the noun.

  • Example: She spoke quietly.
  • Example: He worked carefully.

Quick Rule

  • adjective + -ly -> adverb
  • use the adverb to describe the action

If the question is How?, a regular adverb is often the answer.
