Was or Were? (Past Simple: Was/Were)

Use was with I / he / she / it.

Use were with you / we / they.

This is the past form of be, so it helps you talk about yesterday, last week, or any finished time.

  • Example: I was at home yesterday.
  • Example: They were at school.

Quick Rule

  • I / he / she / it -> was
  • you / we / they -> were

Match the subject first, and the sentence falls into place.
