Grammar notes

Past Spelling Changes (Past Simple: Spelling Rules)

Some regular verbs change their spelling when you add -ed.

A short verb may double the last consonant, and a verb ending in y may change to ied.

The meaning stays simple; only the spelling does a tiny dance.

  • Example: stop -> stopped
  • Example: study -> studied

Quick Rule

  • short stressed verb -> double the last consonant + -ed
  • consonant + y -> ied

Watch the last letters carefully. They like to surprise you.
