Could in the Past (Modal: Could for Past Ability)

Use could to talk about ability in the past.

It tells us what someone was able to do then, not now.

Keep the next verb in the base form.

  • Example: I could swim when I was six.
  • Example: She could read very early.

Quick Rule

  • could + base verb
  • use it for past ability

Think of could as an old photo of a skill.
