Use have to for things that are necessary now or in general.

Use had to for necessity in the past.

It often sounds like a rule, a duty, or a situation you cannot easily change.

  • Example: I have to get up early.
  • Example: We had to wait a long time.

Quick Rule

  • present -> have to / has to
  • past -> had to

Time changes, so the helper changes too.
