Asking About Ongoing Past Actions

Use was or were before the subject to ask about an action in progress in the past. Short answers use the same helper verb. The main verb still stays in the -ing form.

  • Example: What were you doing at six?
  • Example: Was she sleeping? Yes, she was.

Quick Rule

  • question -> Was / Were + subject + verb-ing
  • short answer -> Yes, ... was / were or No, ... wasn't / weren't

Move the helper first, and the question is ready.
