Present Result or Finished Time?

Use the present perfect for a result you can feel now. Use the past simple for an action at a finished past time. Very often, the time word gives you the answer.

  • Example: I have broken my glasses.
  • Example: I broke them yesterday.

Quick Rule

  • no finished time, result now -> present perfect
  • finished time like yesterday, last week, in 2022 -> past simple

Finished time pulls you to the past simple. Present result pulls you to the present perfect.
