Two Choices: Both, Either, Neither

Use both for two things together. Use either for one of two possibilities. Use neither when not one and not the other is true.

  • Example: Both answers are correct.
  • Example: Neither door was open.

Quick Rule

  • both = the two together
  • either = one of the two
  • neither = not this one and not that one

These words are small, but they organize a two-choice world very neatly.
